Main worshipped Kami-sama (Gosaijin)
Tenchi Kane no Kami
In our shrine's faith, called "Konko Faith", the great workings of the universe and nature that gives life to all things, and nurtures all things, is called "Tenchi Kane no Kami" which roughly translates to something like "Gold Kami of the Universe". "Tenchi", or Heaven and Earth, mean Universe / all of existence. And "Kane" means Gold. "no Kami" is a descriptor, meaning "The Kami of..". It gives an image of a light that permeates through the cosmos and nature.
Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama's "Goshintai", 御神体 or the "body" in which they dwell, is the whole entire universe. Our shrine is not where this Kami-sama dwells, for they are all around us. We are a worship hall to pray towards this Kami-sama.Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama spoke of the relationship between Kami and humanity, saying, "If people suffer without receiving "okage"(divine help or blessings), Kami's role is not fulfilled." This was conveyed to the person who first began this way of Konko faith, Ikigami Konko Daijin, as "Kami exists because of people, and people exist because of Kami."This relationship is referred to in our faith as "Aiyo Kakeyo." from Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama (A saying from Okayama prefecture where this faith originated, giving an image of two people doing something together with all their strength. Similar to "heave ho" - giving an image of overcoming something difficult not alone, but together)
Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama is a Kami-sama with a parental unconditional love, and they wish for us to have a connection with the divine, help each other, and live happily.Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama does not abandon humans who do not conform to their will. Rather, they are a Kami-sama who laments the suffering and troubles of people who forget their connection to the divine and that they are alive and living with the blessings of nature and the world around them.
Ikigami Konko Daijin
"Ikigami Konko Daijin" roughly translates to "The Honourable Living Kami of Golden Light" - it is a divine title granted from Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama to a person named Kawate Bunjiro at first, who was the person that began this way of Konko Faith and worship to Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama. At our shrine, we honour his spirit here, alongside Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama and the other Mitama no Kami-sama (divine souls of those who have gone before us).
Although he recieved this title, many other great people in Konko Faith have been granted similar titles - it is not a reflection of a special status or power over others, but a reflection of devotion to helping Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama help others. It is said that there can be many more Konko Daijin's (Honorable Kami of Golden Light) born across the world.Ikigami Konko Daijin-sama (Kawate Bunjiro) was a farmer, and encountered Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama amidst a series of hardships, including the death of family members and his own critical illness.
He learned of Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama's heart, which yearned to save and help people from their sufferings in life, and his faith deepened.
After many years, Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama asked him to quit farming and help people in need.
He then devoted himself to "toritsugi", which means "mediation" and it is the act of praying to the Kami-sama and conveying their wishes to the people.Nowadays, all Konko clergy members carry on this tradition of toritsugi, to help people in need. While Konko clergy are people who are training and dedicating to this way, Ikigami Konko Daijin-sama taught anyone with a truly sincere heart to help others can do toritsugi for others as well.It was also taught by him that "Everyone is a beloved child of Tenchi Kane no Kami-sama, and to be a "Living Kami" (Ikigami) is when Kami-sama is alive here in your own heart."
"Living Kami" (Ikigami) does not mean a special power, but a person with a deep connection with the divine and the Kami-sama.
